LIVINGSTON, NJ – CareOne of Livingston recently accepted the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge by their Morristown counterpart and accepted. This past Friday, residents and employees gathered in the parking lot to celebrate and participate in raising money for ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), a disease that currently affects 30,000 Americans.

“We are doing this because we’ve been challenged by our Morris Assisted Living,” said Handan Inalman, director of sales and marketing. “We want to show that we are a team player – we are a huge organization and we are very excited about this challenge and we want to beat them all. Any type of research to enhance human life we are there. We are in the health business and we want to make sure that people are cared for, so the research must go on. We believe in the cause.”

The Ice Bucket Challenge was created as a way to spread awareness and to raise funds for ALS. It has quickly swept the nation through social media. The challenge involves each nominee posting the video of themself being soaked with ice water and then nominating others to do the same. The nominee can either accept the challenge and donate $10, choose not to accept the challenge and donate $100 to ALS or donate as much as they want. According to, through the challenge $79.7 million has been raised so far for the research of this disease, which affects approximately 30,000 Americans.

As the ice water buckets were being unloaded from a cart in front of CareOne, Fred Dong, a resident family member joked that the buckets were too small. He said, “People usually recognize ALS as Lou Gehrig’s disease but there is so much more research that needs to be done and more people need to know about it.”

“It feels good to make a difference in anybody’s life, no matter how little or big,” said Nina Ravera who staffs the nursing department. Ravera was challenged by two nurse co-workers and said, “I was challenged and I said to them, you do the honors but you have to donate, and they said, ‘Yes.'”
