Now Grimes, the Southeastern Massachusetts operations manager for HealthBridge Management, needs help in return.
In March, Grimes, 42, a Carver resident, was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. Married to his high school sweetheart, the father of four young children is a non-smoker.

On Sunday at 4 p.m. at Fenway Park, CareOne and HealthBridge Management — which operates the New Bedford Health Care Center among other facilities — will sponsor a fundraiser to help him and his family with expenses connected with his illness.

The event will feature food, ballpark tours and guest appearances by Bruins announcer Jack Edwards and former New York Giant Michael Strahan. Grammy award-winning artist Ne-Yo will be performing as well as Natasha Bedingfield, with the goal of raising $1 million.

On its website, CareOne notes that its management “believes in supporting our employees and contributing to the community. We have established The CareOne Cancer Fund in Honor of Dan Grimes, Inc., to provide financial assistance to individuals and families impacted by cancer as well as provide funds to research organizations. Dan Grimes and his family will receive the initial grants.”

“He was always the rock of our family,” said brother Andy Grimes, 36. Whenever a younger family member needed to be watched or someone was packing up to move, Dan would be first one to volunteer, Andy said.
After graduating from Bridgewater State University where he was a football player, Dan entered the health care field, which he has worked in since.
Tickets for Sunday’s fundraiser are $100 for adults and $20 for children under 12, and the event runs from 4 to 8 p.m.
