CareOne Assisted/Senior Living in New Jersey Turns Turquoise in Honor of National Women’s Lung Health Week; To illuminate 29 locations in New Jersey

Calling on the public to ‘Show Your LUNG FORCE’ to defeat the number one cancer killer of women – lung cancer

NEWARK, NJ (May 2, 2017) – The American Lung Association in New Jersey is pleased to announce that CareOne Assisted/Senior Living in New Jersey is supporting LUNG FORCE during National Women’s Lung Health Week (May 8-14, 2017) by turning its 29 locations turquoise and encouraging our community to take action while wearing turquoise in an effort to defeat lung cancer in women. LUNG FORCE is an initiative uniting Americans against lung cancer, the #1 cancer killer of women.

“Anyone can get lung cancer and sadly, one woman dies every eight minutes in the U.S. from the disease. Early detection and treatment of lung cancer translates to higher survival rates, however only 18 percent of lung cancer cases among women are diagnosed early, when the disease is most treatable,” said Deborah P. Brown, President and CEO, American Lung Association of the Mid-Atlantic. “Awareness is critically low – in fact, nearly all women (98%) don’t even have lung cancer on their health radar and most women (71%) believe that not enough is being done to raise awareness for lung cancer.”

Now in its fourth year, the American Lung Association’s LUNG FORCE is encouraging women and men across New Jersey to take a stand against lung cancer by launching a social media campaign called #ShowYourLUNGFORCE to demonstrate the many ways we use our lungs and to inspire others to donate in support of the movement. Donations will support the American Lung Association’s investment in lung cancer research and patient support, including early detection, clinical trials, biomarker testing and advocacy for more federal research funding. It will take a force to end lung cancer and support is critical.

“We are excited to participate with the American Lung Association’s LUNG FORCE throughout our CareOne family care centers. Lung cancer, in particular, is a cause that we are passionate about defeating after the devastating loss of one of our longtime employees – so much so that, in his honor, two years ago we began our own charitable organization to assist our employees who have been stricken with cancer. We applaud all of the efforts and are proud to play a part in this initiative” states Elizabeth Straus, Executive Vice President, CareOne.

“We are excited to be celebrating our fourth annual Turquoise Takeover in New Jersey by illuminating buildings, landmarks and other locations in LUNG FORCE’s signature turquoise color and by showing our LUNG FORCE on the American Lung Association in New Jersey’s social media channels,” added Brown. “Since launching the initiative in 2014, we’ve made great strides in spreading awareness among New Jersey residents and I’m excited to see what this year will bring.”

Below are some of the ways to take action.

1. Participate on social media:

  • Upload a video or photo to your social channels – Facebook, Twitter or Instagram – demonstrating how you Show Your LUNG FORCE and use the #ShowYourLUNGFORCE hashtag

3. Donate in-store: Stop by any CVS Pharmacy location from May 7-27 to donate $3 at the register to raise much needed funds for lung cancer awareness and visit Lung.org/CVS for easy ways you can help your community become tobacco-free. The in-store campaign is part of CVS Health’s 5-year $50 million initiative to help deliver the nation’s first tobacco-free generation.

LUNG FORCE is a national initiative led by the American Lung Association to unite women against lung cancer, the #1 cancer killer of women. LUNG FORCE has three priorities: 1) Make lung cancer a cause that people care about – and act on; 2) Educate and empower patients and healthcare providers and 3) Raise critical funds for lung cancer research. The American Lung Association’s LUNG FORCE is nationally presented by CVS Health. Find out more at www.lung.org .
