Innovative New Programs Enhance CareOne At Ridgewood Avenue’s Rehabilitation Services
CareOne at Ridgewood Avenue recently introduced new, cutting edge programs to enhance its rehabilitation services. These innovative additions include the OmniVR™ Virtual Rehabilitation System and a comprehensive Activity of Daily Living (ADL) Suite.
Developed by Accelerated Care Plus, the nation’s leading provider of integrated clinical programs, the OmniVR™ Virtual Rehabilitation System is designed to meet the challenging needs of aging adults. Patients are guided by therapists through interactive exercises and activities using a computer-generated environment, which introduces challenging virtual tasks with less risk and creates an environment that would be difficult, if not impossible, to naturally replicate in a rehab setting. “We chose to integrate this innovative tool into our clinical treatment program for a variety of evidence-based reasons,” said CareOne Senior Director of Education and Development Robert Clark, PT, DPT, who has published research on virtual reality. “OmniVR enhances our patient’s abilities, boosts confidence and makes exercising more fun, which motivates patients to participate for longer periods of time. It also allows us to monitor each patient and provides therapists with objective data on patient performance. OmniVR™ helps define what makes CareOne different from other subacute rehabilitation programs.”
As part of a total renovation of the entire CareOne at Ridgewood Avenue center, a brand-new ADL Suite was built in the rehabilitation therapy gym. This suite includes a bedroom, bathroom and kitchen, complete with a dining area and washer/dryer. The ADL Suite simulates the patient’s home environment and enables patients to practice activities of daily living, with guidance from their therapist, to make the transition home as smooth as possible. These activities include getting in and out of the bathtub and bed, making the bed, bending to retrieve items from low shelves in the refrigerator, reaching to get items from high cabinets, cooking, serving food, setting the table, washing dishes and doing laundry. “The ADL Suite was created to help our patients and their families gain the confidence necessary to safely return to the job of living,” said CareOne Senior Vice President of Rehabilitation Services Ian Oppel. “Each replicated home environment allows practice, training and ultimately return demonstration of instrumental activities of daily living under the skilled support and direction of our professional therapy team.”
