Five-Star Recognition for All CareOne Centers in Morris County
MORRIS COUNTY, NJ — April 24, 2014 — CareOne, a premier network of senior care centers throughout New Jersey, has received the highest ratings at all three of its skilled nursing centers in Morris County. CareOne at Hanover in Whippany, CareOne at Morris in Parsippany-Troy Hills, and CareOne at Madison Avenue in Morristown have each received five-star quality ratings from CMS (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services). This is the one rating system that is standardized and sanctioned by the government, and it contains quality-of-care information on every Medicare and Medicaid-certified nursing home in the country, including over 15,000 nationwide.
Criteria for Centers of Excellence
State survey teams spend several days, unannounced, in licensed, skilled nursing centers to assess whether the facility is in compliance with federal requirements. Surveys provide a comprehensive assessment of areas such as medication management, quality of care & services, quality of assessment & assurance, resident needs, nursing home administration, environment, kitchen/food services, and resident rights and quality of life. The Five-Star Quality Rating System incorporates the results of the three most recent standard surveys, the results from any complaint investigations during the most recent three-year period, and any revisits needed to verify that required corrections have brought the facility back into compliance.
Overall ratings in the CMS system are based on three primary domains; Health Inspections, Quality Measures (QMs), and Staffing. “The CMS rating system is well recognized as an indicator of quality and services,” says Karen Davidson, Senior Vice President of Clinical and Quality Services, “It is an important tool to help identify the quality of care delivered. We do, however, encourage people to come for a tour of our centers to fully appreciate the range of services, programs, and expertise that CareOne offers.” Of the more than 15,000 facilities across the country, less than 25% have received an overall five-star rating in any one rating period. Rating periods occur on a quarterly basis.
Recognized for Excellence and Areas of Strength
Generally, throughout the industry, four and five-star facilities are considered to be centers of excellence. CareOne at Madison Avenue has a reputation for excellence in oncology services, and the Assistant Administrator here, Natalie Rivera, says, “We embrace this five-star achievement with incredible pride — it’s a true team effort that inspires us to reach down deep and make a difference regarding our patients’ needs.” Laurie Kleid, Administrator of CareOne at Morris which features its Diabetes Management Program, adds, “As caregivers, we are empowered to continue to grow and learn so that we are able to provide positive outcomes for our patients.”
“While our scores were strong across all rating sections, we rank particularly high in Quality Measures, and Staffing is also extraordinary,” reports Ms. Davidson. “Staffing decisions here are based, first and foremost, on hiring the highest quality professionals for the particular care that each patient requires. The staffing ratios at CareOne exceed both state and national averages, and our centers typically rank highest in Registered Nurse (RN) hours per patient day.”
Fostering a Culture of Quality
Above and beyond the ratings benchmarks, CareOne places strong emphasis on better customer service and optimal environments within each of the centers. “Every member of our team, all the way up to the Sr. Vice President of Clinical and Quality, is indoctrinated into our World-Class Customer Service program,” states Elizabeth Straus, Executive VP of CareOne, “We all place tremendous value on the program, which helps us put the fundamentals of great customer service into practice. As a result, the staff at CareOne continues to make great strides as a team in providing exceptional care to all of our patients.”
