Dementia Capable Care Training for CareOne Therapists

Seventeen CareOne therapists attended a two-day course in Dementia Capable Care on April 20th and 21st in Newark, NJ.

Day one provided the foundation course which established a common framework about Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD), a best-abilities perspective, dementia stages, behavior management, and care techniques to promote the best ability to function. Completion of this course provides each therapist an opportunity to earn Dementia Care Specialist Certification.

Day two was the Dementia Therapy Applications course which built upon the fundamental concepts, providing therapists with specific skills on how to evaluate and treat people at all cognitive levers, and how to best document best ability to function.

At CareOne, Dementia Capable Care (DCC) advocates care for our most vulnerable population, those with impaired cognitive function, either as a result of a chronic disease progression (such as Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s Disease) or as a result of hopefully a reversible onset from a stroke, brain injury, infection, or even prolonged effects of anesthesia post surgical procedure.

DCC is Person-Centered Care at its finest – gathering a person’s life story (interests, preferences, habits, work history, family history, etc.) in order to approach them in a way which gains trust.

We can then complete a physical, occupational, and/or speech therapy assessment and along with skilled observation of the therapist determine objectively an individual’s level of cognitive function.

Objectively determining cognitive function guides a Care Partner on how to make changes to the environment, activity, and/or Care Partner approach in order for a person with dementia to achieve his/her best ability to function.

Maintaining best ability to function will slow the deterioration process of these debilitating chronic diseases, lessen unwanted behaviors a person is exhibiting trying to use to communicate because we are not understanding their goals and needs, and help family members and friends regain a meaningful role in the life of their loved one.

Dementia Capable Care has raised the standard of care at CareOne to set us apart from others!

CareOne is one of only a handful of National Providers recognized as a Dementia Capable Society Leader for our commitment to the principles of person-centered care for people with dementia and those who care for them.
